Google has confirmed a bizarre new bug affecting all Gmail users, where the service throws a sender warning for every email it receives. Here’s everything you need to know.

The bug first appeared on Thursday when Gmail appended a security warning reserved for suspicious emails to anything that arrived in a recipient’s inbox. On Friday, Google later confirmed that the problem has spread more widely than initially thought, “affecting both Gmail consumers and enterprise customers.”


The notice reads as follows:Do you want to continue receiving messages from this sender? [Emphasis Gmail’s] Please give us feedback on this post. We won’t ask you any further questions about this sender, although you can always unsubscribe or mark it as spam in the future.

Under normal circumstances, Gmail only attaches this message to emails where the service suspects the sender and flags them as a potential security risk that you might want to spam. So it could (naturally) be a cause for concern if it gets en masse attached to new emails.

In its latest update, Google reports: “Our engineering team has identified the root cause, prevented further affected messages and is continuing to work to remove labels from emails containing this false banner. »

Google says there will be another update on the issue over the weekend. In the meantime, if you whitelist actual spam or phishing attempts, be diligent and don’t ignore any notification alerts attached to your emails.

Update 7/11: Google released a new update for the problem and says it’s now fixed: “The problem with Gmail has been fixed. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience and continued support.

I’ve been following user responses to this issue and noticed that some say they still see reviews. However, it is impossible to know if these emails were applied to genuinely worrying emails. It may also be the case that while incoming emails are no longer mislabeled, all banners incorrectly applied to existing emails have not yet been removed for each user.

I will continue to monitor reactions on social media and forums and will update if I see any signs of ongoing concern.
