According to Counterpoint Research’s Quarterly Mobile Application Tracker, the active user base of the Glance lock screen platform in India grew by 30% YoY to 183 million in the first quarter of 2022. Glance added over 10 million users in the first quarter of 2022, representing a 6% sequential growth.

Major smartphone players like Xiaomi (including Poco), Samsung, OPPO, Vivo and Realme, which collectively account for more than three quarters of the Indian smartphone market, all currently have Glance as their lock screen platform.

Inmobi’s Glance, which has a presence in India, Indonesia and parts of Southeast Asia, has a strong focus on expansion into existing markets as well as new markets. In addition to its recent partnership with realme, Glance has announced several collaborative projects with major Indonesian brands, publishers, and developers as part of its “Indonesia First” strategy, alongside existing partnerships such as Xiaomi, Vivo, and OPPO. It also plans to launch in other regions such as Latin America and the United States – markets that will offer significant additional opportunities.

Commenting on the factors that contributed to the growth of the Glance lock screen, research analyst Arushi Chawla said: “The Glance lock screen, available as a pre-installed app on smartphones, has been the primary and efficient way to engage users with the platform. However, the platform’s offerings and the growing traction around live entertainment and Glance commerce all help Glance improve user experience and user engagement to go beyond content ingestion and deliver unique interactions.

Chawla added: “Through the recent partnership with Realme, Glance now covers all top 5 smartphone players in India – Xiaomi, Samsung, Realme, Vivo and OPPO, which together represent over 75% of the Indian smartphone market. This was the main reason behind the increase in Glance’s active user base in the first quarter of 2022. The partnership with realme will help ensure that Glance’s installed base continues to grow rapidly. And with Glance going live on the Reliance Jio smartphone and its plans to expand into new geographic markets, it’s likely to gain further growth momentum.”

Beginning its journey in 2019, Glance created an unprecedented positioning by embracing the use of the lock screen as a content discovery benefit, by making infotainment and trending content available 24/7 as a differentiator. Now other high-end smartphone brands like Apple are interested in improving the lock screen experience.
